The Airedale GP Training Reading Group

The group was established after some of us attended a course on using the Arts in GP Education.  Trainers and trainees and other health professionals meet roughly once a month and enjoy a meal before an often heated discussion.  It's a very informal way of finding out about new books and sharing our impressions.

All are welcome - if you would like to come please contact Jim Hodgson.  If you would just like to try some of our previous books look below to see our impressions.

The Wide Sargasso Sea

Jean Rhys

This book (a prequel to Jane Eyre) was suggested after someone mentioned how many times they had gone back to reading Jane Eyre.  It could be worth going back to the original to revisit it or even the fantastic Eyre Affair by Jasper fforde to really get into it.

Brooklyn

Colm Toibin

We had a really good discussion about this book which made people enjoy the book and rate it more highly after the discussion.  Set in the Ireland of the 1950's a young woman emigrates to America and starts to build a new life in Brooklyn.  When she has to return she is faced with a difficult dilemma.  This book won the 2009 Costa Award and is well worth a read (and a discussion).

Girl with a Dragon Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Stieg Larsson

This was a really popular choice reflecting the success of this trilogy.  The choice of an alternative heroine with slightly autistic tendencies and a traumatic past made for a fascinating read and most people went on to devour the other two books.

The first film has been released and the other two will soon follow.

If on a Winter's Night a Traveller

Italo Calvino

This was one of those  books which was not universally enjoyed! The author writes  each chapter in a different style and seems to break off at the exciting stage.  Interspersed with these chapters is another narrative exploring different aspects of what it means to be a reader or a writer.  One comment was that it was a bit like a morning surgery - each consultation is a different story where you may never know the conclusion. It's a real brain teaser but some people felt the author was being too clever for his own good.  A challenge - but not for the faint hearted!
